Cervical Smears Factsheet

What is new in cervical cytology?

A new testing technique, "ThinPrep Pap Test", has been developed to overcome some of the shortcomings of cervical cancer screening.

How is ThinPrep Pap Test different?

The cells are still collected in the usual way; there is no additional discomfort. Now, instead of smearing the cells onto a glass slide, they are rinsed into a vial filled with a preservative solution.

Why is ThinPrep Pap Test better?

The procedure involves the cells being released into liquid, making virtually all of the cells suitable for examination. Studies around the world have proven ThinPrep Pap Test is more accurate than the conventional cervical smear.

What should I do about this?

Nothing; the practice protocol for cervical cancer screening now uses ThinPrep Pap Test exclusively.

Cervical cancer screening is of proven value in cancer prevention and this new laboratory technique materially improves the opportunity for cancer detection - if you are under 65 years, you should have your cervix examined annually and we will remind you.
